DNA camp

Image
Max and his friend Nick attended DNA camp at Cold Spring Harbor Labs last week. They spent a week doing real science - making and looking at slides under the microscope, extracting their own DNA, and a genetic engineering experiment where they added bioluminesence from a firefly to a bacterial culture to cause it to glow in the dark.  The week culminated in a science fair like presentation for the parents at the Dolan Learning Center.  Nature magazine was well represented in the lobby exhibits, including this wall sized replica of the Human Genome draft as published in 2001.

So I'm a little behind in my posting - June was a crazy month with the end of school. I'll try to catch up over the next couple of weeks.  Here's a photo of Max at athe 5th grade awards ceremony. He won a congressional honor for academics and citizenship. It was a surprise to Max and to us (not that he won it of course, but that the award existed in the first place!)  He also took home academic awards for Math and Spanish, and a collection of honors for music, PE, student council, etc...  He is indeed as awesome as he sometimes reminds us that he is.  We're always so proud of you Maxwell. You amaze me every day.
